Yes there are genuinely good people in AA
I can see where giving a fast read through my postings that you might get the impression that I think the fellowship of AA is as evil as the current leaders of the GOP. Well for the record, I do not think that.
There really are a great many people in AA and CA (the two fellowships I have been part of these last 16 years) who are genuinely good and kind people. I have been to many meetings where the majority of people at that meeting were really true to heart good people. In fact my home group is such a group. I took my new comer chip there and met my current sponsor at this meeting. Another such meeting was the Hermosa Beach morning meeting I attended daily during the 90’s.
Of course there are some genuine bullshit groups and meetings in the fellowships too. However, most of the fellowships’ meetings are a mix of good and bullshit people. These are my personal observations, which I would like to think are solid enough to be called fact, that do NOT contradict any of my earlier assertions.
Good people are capable of deceiving themselves.
Bullshit people will blanantly exaggerate and lie in their sharing and pitches so they can elevate themselves in the fellowship standings.
The members of the fellowship all know one is looked upon in good light to share “all I have that is good and wholesome is due to GOD and the steps”. It’s also well known that whatever is going on in your life that is not good or even down right bad, can easily be blamed on self-will and loosing contact with your higher power. To own up, in a meeting, that your self-will is what caused your current hardships is seen as a great display of humility. The fellowship applaudes such behavorior.
Genuinely good people can and do follow this line of behavorior and thought. Its human nature to follow what your group (tribe, nation, etc) condones as good behavior. Genuinely bullshit people will use that knowledge to their advantage in a conscious effort while sharing and pitching.
When you meet the genuinely good people of AA, it will be extremely easy to beleive everything they will tell you about AA and the 12 step program. That’s how I got hooked in. Thanks to the genuinely good people of the fellowships, I went from a “wait and see” position, when first starting out in the sober life, to the full speed ahead with GOD and the steps position.
Really great people tell me about thier fantastic lives AND TELLING ME I COULD HAVE IT TOO. How could I resist? How can you?!
Just thought I should make a posting that points this out
Hope you all have a good memorial weekend.
Sincerely
Harry A.
