Since AA continues to grow, this blog must be wrong, right?
Alcoholics Anonymous has been around since the late 1930’s. Every year since the printing of its book in 1939, the fellowship has grown. AA can be found in literally hundreds of countries and on every continient. Whether or not you have ever been part of any 12 step fellowship, you would have to conclude that what ever this blog has to say against AA just has to be wrong. I mean that’s the only conclussion a reasonable person can come to, right?
Well, actually no. That is not the only reasonable conclussion you can have. If you rely on someone else to tell you what this blog is all about, that could be your conclussion. If you read a half of one posting on this blog, you might reached that conclussion. But otherwise, assuming you have an ability to read of at least a high school level and you can follow simple logic and arguments, then you should not come to any conclussion that is as simple as “this blog says all of AA is wrong and it wants AA to be closed down”.
FOR THE RECORD: I have already written in my postings and comments to readers many times over, that AA is needed for many people who are alcoholics. And that I recognize Alcoholism as a real problem. I do not rally for AA’s dismisal. take the time to read all the postings, and any comments left by me. And that will tell you what this blog is about.
So, AA continues to grow. Why? The answer once again relies of the simplicity of human nature; people want to be part of a group. When you give up your group(s) and find yourself alone, you will react. Most people, no matter what part of the social/economic sector they come from, will try to remedy that emptiness and replace the missing group interaction.
Can’t be part of the guys at the tavern any more cuz you have to stop drinking?
Can’t be part of the guys at the 19th hole cuz you have to stop drinking?
Can’t be part of the guys at your buddies garage drinking beers from the cooler?
Can’t be part of the guys who are haning out behind the school gym smoking weed, cuz you need to be sober?
Or maybe which ever group above WAS your group, in the end of your drinking and using, you were all alone. The same rule applies.
So NOW what? Watch TV until its bed time? Have no friends at all because all the people you were friends with were the drinking people? Just dont drink, and then go to work, maybe church, and then straight home? Who the f*ck wants that for a sober life.
The fellowship of AA, your local AA (or other 12 step fellowship) groups, are what you will need to keep you not just from drinking, but from blowing your head off with a shot gun. You found yourself in need of stopping the partying. You needed to get clean and here is a whole group of people who use to party just like you did and they all are talking about stopping and stay stopped when it comes to drinking and using. It’s not hard to figure out this is the new group to fill your life.
That wasnt rocket science was it? Does that sound like Bullshit to you? Does my reason why people want to do more than just learn about not drinking from AA? Dont you want to go to the AA parties? Be part of the AA guys who watch football at Bob’s house? Go to meetings at least every other night, just to have a place to go to and people to see. I mean, shit, these are nice people and they are sober for a while and hell yeah I am going to be part of this fellowship 100 percent. This is normal human nature.
And lastly for todays posting. So you have this new group that is just fantastic. All your new AA buddies and all your new AA functions to attend. And you hear from a guy’s sponsee about this blog on the internet that wants to bring down AA. Well, let’s go take care of that asshole. We’re just gonna get online and post how wrong that guy and his blog are about AA.
I’d like to tell those guys to not rely on what they were told by that guy who’s sponsee said I wrote - but what would be the point of doing that since they signup to post a comment and have not read anything I wrote. But I am happy YOU are here still reading. it’s more encouraging than you know to have you here reading the postings til they end.
Still Sober as of 1pm today

Hi Harry. I left a comment on your blog months + months ago when I first abandoned AA. Sorry I haven’t kept up with you. I am still sober. I recently decided to go to some NA meetings out of boredom, and also because my truck is broken down + I can’t afford to fix it + so the meeting was a place to walk to so I could at least get out of the apartment for a bit. It only took me a few meetings to realize it was the same old junk. I finished trade school and I have a good job now but I seem to always be broke. Anyway thanks for maintaining this blog and thanks for letting me rant.

I think the record would indicate that AA membership in the U.S. has actually declined since the early 90’s. If it wasn’t for so many courts sentencing people to mandatory attendance of AA it would have declined more
